Listening

The first duty of love is to listen.

Listening is a choice. The gracious, deliberate choice to value, and pay attention to another person, an entire group, and certainly God.

Listening increases our own self-awareness, which in turn can awaken us, and return us to the One in whose image we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Listening can stand us on our heads, especially in the company of unlikely teachers.  For instance:

Not being a follower of Star Trek, I never thought I’d ever invoke the name of William Shatner out loud (which I just did). So, when I came across his words, below, I had smile:

Why does the lizard stick his tongue out? The lizard sticks its tongue out because that’s the way it’s listening and looking and tasting its environment. It’s its means of appreciating what’s in front of it.

An appetite for listening! Well done, Captain Kirk. May you live long and prosper.
